Thyroid Disease

Thyroid Disease is caused by malfunction in the secretion of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones are produced by the thyroid gland and control the rate of metabolism in the body.

  • When the thyroid gland secretes an excess of thyroid hormones, it is known as hyperthyroidism or Graves Disease. In this condition the body starts to produce antibodies that mimic the thyroid stimulating hormone. The thyroid gland then increases the amount of thyroid hormones that it produces and releases, and metabolism in the body is sped up.

  • When the thyroid gland secretes too little thyroid hormone, it is known as hypothyroidism. In this condition the immune system produces antibodies that destroy thyroid tissue, which in turn decreases the production and release of thyroid hormones. Metabolism is slowed down and weight gain usually occurs.

Thyroid Disease can usually be controlled through medications and must be diagnosed through a blood test that checks the level of thyroid hormones in the blood.
