Teething
Baby teeth start falling out around 4 months of age. Like a teething baby, this can be a period of stress due to a sore mouth. Dry food and biscuits help the puppy go through teething quicker by providing them something to crunch on.
We recommend waiting out the period of teething instead of switching to a canned food even if the puppy's appetite is affected for a few days. If you change the puppy's food, this can cause additional stress and potentially intestinal upset. A puppy's stomach is very sensitive to food changes.
If your dog seems to be in extreme pain and cannot eat his dry food, you can soak his regular food in warm water for ten to fifteen minutes. Whatever food the puppy does not eat in one setting, however, must be discarded because of the moisture will begin to rot the food.
If baby teeth have not been replaced by permanent teeth by 6-7months of age, they must be removed by the veterinarian.
